José Antonio Ibarra, a viticulturist and enologist
from a family with a long tradition in winemaking
founded Bodegas Augusta Bilbilis in 2006
to produce top quality wines.
Over 2000 years ago wine was made in the Celtiberian town of Segeda, modern Mara (Zaragoza) as attested to by the discovery of the world’s oldest winepress.
In the year 2006, José Antonio Ibarra, an enologist with wide experience in the world of wines founded BODEGAS AUGUSTA BILBILIS in Mara as he returned to his roots and to the original wine he first knew as a child. José Antonio took the plunge and remodelled the winery that his grandfather had used to make wine back in the 1940s.
The philosophy of this new project is based on the production of wines to promote Mara and Calatayud around the world using natural high mountain viticulture techniques availing of the local climate and of the full potential of the autochthonous grape, garnacha.
